My friend Jim Fidler jr. (whose first CD Gypsy was released on Iona
Records in Europe) is currently touring counties Waterford, Wexford
and Kilkenny solo (so without the other eight or nine members
including Dave and Geoff Panting ex-of Rawlins Cross of his full
band Jim Fidler and The Experience, which may hit the festival
circuit in 2005). He plays over 12 instruments (and sings and
writes songs) but I think on this tour is just bringing acoustic
guitar and tin whistle(s) and not keyboard or drum kit or other
instruments he plays. (In his full band he mainly plays drum kit.)

Waterford, Wexford, and Kilkenny counties are the areas of
Ireland where most in Newfoundland with old (often 250 years
or more date of emigration to Newfoundland) Irish roots trace
our ancestry, and indeed St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador
is twinned with Waterford city, Ireland, and St. John's also has
a Waterford river.

Anyway, if any of you hear him play live, follow up to this post
with a note on what you think.

I think the tour will draw mainly from his two solo CDs
Gypsy and Friendly Fire which are covered on the
web page http://www.jimfidler.com , and some
new material.

His favourite pint is Smithwick's if you want to buy him one.

I am not sure what pub he is playing at tonight.

When I was a kid I delivered cigarettes to Cullen's pub among others.
A big cardboard box full of fags (No 6, B & H, Embassy red) with a delivery note
(good job I could almost read), Bowles would give me a bottle of coke, and Bennetts too
(I was told that the barman in Bennetts would give me what for if I happened to drop a
penny), but when I went to Cullens the old barman would say
"do you want a pint of smath wacks?"
Bowles and Bennetts and McConvilles are all still on the go,
but Cullens is a clothes shop now.

Fuck I hate to see a pub vanish...and they do.

Which, apparently, one can now get in Boston, MA. This (and the note
below) makes me wish I still lived up there.

Mick O'Brien and Caoimh=EDn =D3 Raghallaigh will be playing on Martha's
Vineyard Thurs. Oct 28th. Just a note in case anyone is in the area. info-

Smithwicks is now being advertised in Ireland with an enthusiasm that
would put the Budwieser product manager to shame. Lovely photos on
big billboards. It's a georgous beer to look at, for sure.

I was in a pub in Clare recently waiting for the singer to show up. I
was on American time, and he was on Irish time, so I finished my pint
of Guinness before he showed. To kill time, I ordered a pint of
Smithwicks.

The singer showed up, and started off his set by saying, "I knew this
girl before she went to Amsterdam. It didn't turn out well." And
then he sang (badly) Michael Smith's "The Dutchman."

I finished the beer and the singer at the same time. I'd say, on
balance, that he was a better trad singer than Smithwicks was beer,
but it was a near thing. Imagine Coors Light dyed a deep reddish
amber, with an unpleasant aftertaste.

Yuk.
